Metal Sculpting: Refurbished Metal Artworks
May 14, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Need some yard art or a new trellis for your garden plot?
Join us at The Garage for an introductory session on how to make art using a combination of scrap and new metal.
$125 per student, with a four person limit, which allows for safe and personal instruction. If bringing a friend, we’re happy to apply an additional $25 of Garage credit per individual.
Our class schedule is as follows:
6:00 -7:00 Introduction to MIG welders, Oxy-Acetylene torches abrasive chop saw, angle grinders and their safe applications
7:00 -7:45 Setup and cutting practice with chop saw and oxy-acetylene torch
7:45-9:00 MIG Welder setup and practice
9:00+ Project wrap up with some overage possible.
Class goals include:
– Review shop safety procedures and appropriate application of equipment
– Discuss selecting metals and ideal scrap materials.
– Learn to prepare, cut, heat and bend (reclaimed and new) metal pieces
– Use of Oxy-acetylene cutting tip
– Use of MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welders
– Use of GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) welders
If you would like to bring in your own project scrap metal, we likely may accommodate that request. Additional welding hours are available in combination with Garage credit, for a very reasonably priced extended experience.
Each student will be able to access shop scrap for creating their own table top scrap art project.
Students will need to dress in thick natural fiber clothes (not loose fitting) and leather boots. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own leather work gloves and eye protection. In ear protection will be provided as well as gloves and eye protection for those in need.
